As Greek Week ends, members of Greek organizations are preparing for one last hurrah: Airbands.

The annual competition requires each team, usually made up of three different fraternities and sororities, to make up dance routines to songs and perform them for the Greek life community at the end of the week.

Most teams have been practicing since the beginning of spring quarter, including Team Hercules, which consists of members from Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Epsilon Pi and Kappa Alpha Psi.

Airbands is one of the most popular events for members of Greek life to participate in during Greek Week for a variety of reasons.

“Why not? It’s fun,” Alpha Omicron Pi sophomore Alison Gay said.

“I do [Airbands] to be involved and competitive,” AOPi sophomore Megan Duffin said. “I’m not a dancer, but it’s an opportunity for me to show off the sweet dance moves I do have in a fun environment."

While Airbands is considered to be a generally fun activity, each team knows that a significant amount of effort and dedication is required in order to do well.

“Learning all the dance moves can be challenging, and every team has a lot of potential,” Duffin said.

“Keeping stamina is tough sometimes because, along with Airbands practice, we have to keep up with our schoolwork and other organizations,” Gay said.

Those who participate in Airbands agree that the hard work is worth it because it brings members of Greek life together. “You get to know members of other Greek organizations,” AOPi freshman Becky Smolenski said. “It’s a great experience."

Airbands begins at noon on Saturday, May 10, at the Convocation Center.
